INTERNET EXPLORER
One task we had at the agency with Microsoft was to develop 'developer demos' showcasing what the latest versions of Internet Explorer could do. Over time, we transformed these demos from simple animations into full-fledged interactive experiences, and this is my favorite story.
Back in 2012, when Facebook had just gone public and internet memes like Nyan Cat were mainstream, most internet games were still made with Adobe Flash. But Flash was on its way out, and HTML5 was the new thing—and Internet Explorer handled HTML5 really well. So, we decided to create an arcade game with marshmallows that loved to smash things. We debuted it at a Microsoft SXSW party in a full-sized arcade cabinet. When we revealed that the entire game was running off an average laptop in Internet Explorer, developers were blown away. It was exciting to turn a dry, technical topic into something everyone could enjoy—like kicking a narwhal in the face.
The game was inspired by the web video 'Marshmallow People', created by Jason Steele, the guy also behind 'Charlie the Unicorn.' We got his blessing, and he loved the new characters we added.
