INTERNET EXPLORER 8
AGENCY: BRADLEY AND MONTGOMERY
ROLES: ART DIRECTOR, WRITER, ILLUSTRATOR, ANIMATOR, experiential design
Internet Explorer had its moment. It was the most-used browser… until it wasn’t. By the time Microsoft gave it a glow-up with some “cool at the time” features, we jumped in to help shift perception. Being the underdogs in the wild west of the internet was a blast. The spots? Directed by Bobcat Goldthwait, starring a 2009-era Dean Cain, and—because it wouldn’t be the internet without some chaos—one was pulled almost as fast as it went live.

INTERNET EXPLORER 9
When Internet Explorer 9 came around they tapped us to show off the new feature of pinning websites to your taskbar for easy use so we tapped a bunch of internet celebrities like Kari and Tori from Mythbusters, Brian Posehn, Alison Haislip and the dude from Epic Meal Time. The internet in 2011 seemed like such a happier place. Plus we got to make a Baconham Lincoln.

INTERNET EXPLORER & SXSW
One of our Microsoft projects turned a dry “developer demo” into something way more fun—an arcade game about marshmallows that had to kick creatures to prevent themselves from dying of boredom.
In 2012, Flash was fading, HTML5 was rising, and Internet Explorer actually handled it well (surprise!). We built a full-fledged game and debuted it at SXSW in a real arcade cabinet—only to reveal it was running on a basic laptop in IE. Minds were blown. Inspired by Jason Steele’s Marshmallow People, we got his blessing, added new characters, and even made narwhal-kicking part of the fun.
I illustrated and came up with the additional characters.

The internet used to be a truly special place of fun and enjoyment. Remember some of the golden years and go back in time to 2009.
